KUALA LUMPUR:Taman Kepong residents who found themselves with temporary land titles after living there for 40 years can now sleep easy. The Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Land and Mines Department will be looking into the status of their titles.
Responding to the Streets frontpage article on Nov 17 headlined "Temporary titles land Taman Kepong in limbo", the department's deputy director (registration) Latif Ali advised the affected residents or their representatives to contact its land development division officer Siti Farizan Shoukkatt Ali at 03-261 03379 or email sitifarizan@ptgwp.gov.my.
Latif explained that registered land ownership for a development would normally involve the issuance of qualified ownership to its owners.
The final title will be issued after a licensed land surveyor appointed by the project developer has carried out a survey and submitted the plan to the Survey and Mapping Department for validation.
The Survey and Mapping Department will then check, verify and produce a certified plan to be registered by the Land Office.
Land owners for qualified title have the same rights as final title owners for non-land related dealings such as transfer of ownership and mortgage can be done.
However, qualified titles are not allowed by the National Land Code to be subdivided and merged.
Latiff assured the residents that they would not be asked to move from their properties to make way for development.
Under the Land Acquisition Act 1960, the government may take over a land regardless of its qualified or final title status, with compensation.
It was reported that about 1,000 families who have lived in Taman Kepong for over 40 years did not have permanent land titles. -- By Dawn Chan
